Infrared Scotland and Valencia

I took a trip overseas with Dea in 2026, and took one of my infrared cameras, it’s a Canon 550D with a wide angle lens, modified so it records infrared light, which is strongly reflected by vegetation. I like to create panoramas, producing wide angle views of landscapes.

Dea designed the visit around a fascination with the Iron Age, so we took a tour of Scotland, visiting Iron Age and neolithic settlements around Scotland, especially in the Border Country, then up into Orkney and Shetland. We visited lots of the towns and settlements along the coastlines and inland, hill forts and built structures, like a “Broch”, a tall cylindrical castle built in Scotland during the Iron Age around 300BC.

Shooting infrared in these landscapes is a real pleasure - they are often full of vegetation as well as monumental stone structures and ruins, and sometimes with dramatic skies and plays of light, especially in Shetland and Orkney, where the light is incredible, it kindof crashes down as beams out of cloudscapes.

The collection ends with a couple days in Valencia, where we visited friends. Valencia is a beautiful and striking city, and a wander in the cactus collection at the botanical garden turned up some lovely images.
