New Zealand Infrared

One of the common themes of my work is that I have a love of the visual effects you can achieve using infrared light in photography. All of my satellite imaging work uses the infrared bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, which are used by scientists, for example, to monitor vegetation health because vegetation reflects infrared light very strongly.

In addition, I also use a camera that has been converted to record infrared as well as visible light, and I use a range of filters and false-colour mappings to achieve a range of visual effects. The results are pretty stunning - and for the past few years, whenever I go home to New Zealand, I take the infrared camera and explore how the staggering beauty of New Zealand can be rendered in infrared. So here’s a small sample, from Tongariro National Park, the Wairarapa, Rotorua and the Coromandel.
